Florence Breanka Cornish:
Ralph Waldo
Emerson declared that the things ahead and behind us are of no comparison to
that within us. Miss Florence Breanka Cornish, daughter of Mr. John Cornish and
Mrs. Cynthia Cornish, embodies the implications of this precept. The
22-year-old native of Columbia, South Carolina has lived the majority of her
exemplary life in Jacksonville, Florida. She is a senior Political Science major
with a minor in Education and a 3.66 grade point average.
In the fall of 2001, Miss Florence Breanka Cornish entered
Savannah State University with dual purpose—to serve and make a difference.
Throughout her matriculation, Florence has remained active in organizations and
activities both on and off campus. Her extracurricular activities have included
being a member of the first Diversity Education Exchange Project (DEEP), the
Peer Counselor’s Association, the NAACP, Sisters Striving for Excellence, the
Volleyball, Softball, and Track teams, and Student Government Association.
Florence has also been in several leadership positions here at Savannah State
University. She has served as Miss Black & Gold 2002-2003, a Resident
Assistant, and Captain of the Volleyball team.
Further solidifying her political aspirations, she served as
Sophomore Class Treasurer, Junior Class President as well as Chaplain and
Sergeant of Arms in Sisters Striving for Excellence (wherein she has continued
to dominate the political arena having been promoted to Vice President). Her
influence is felt in the local community as she gives back by volunteering at
Spencer Elementary School where she serves as a tutor, mentor, and motivator to
young minds. She also annually volunteers with the Tybee Marathon event and Feed
the City with 94.1: The Beat around the Thanksgiving holiday.
The recipient of multiple accolades, her contagious work
ethic has been both scholastically and nationally recognized. Her honors
include: the highest G.P.A on the Volleyball and Track Teams, Resident Assistant
of the Year, the Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship from the alumnae chapter in
Jacksonville, Florida, a full athletic volleyball scholarship, the Hill Hall
Scholarship, the Lap Top Scholarship, the W.W. Law Scholarship, and she is a
Silver Medallion Scholar. Recently, she was recognized in the Savannah State
University magazine for being one of the top leaders here on campus. She also
had the opportunity to represent Savannah State University in Washington, DC as
an intern with Congressman Max Burns in summer of 2003 and at the University of
Nebraska for a summer Pre-Law Institute this past summer.
Miss Florence Breanka Cornish’s past and current achievements
provide more than mere fodder for her career goals to blossom. To become a
successful corporate lawyer and to one day open a recreation center in a
low-income community where children of all ages can come for tutoring,
mentoring, extra-curricular activities, professional training, proper etiquette
training, liberal arts training, free of charge are not lofty, distant wishes.
Rather, they are forthcoming truths of imminent proportions.
Miss Florence Breanka Cornish remains a member of Open Arms
Christian Fellowship, in Jacksonville, Florida where Leofric Thomas is the
Pastor. Giving all thanks and praises to God from whom all blessings flow, she
believes that if God will bring you to it than God will surely bring you through
it and that He will never place more on you than you can bear. Miss Florence
Breanka Cornish also believes we were placed on earth to serve and not to be
served. It is not our duty to look down on someone or to judge them; instead
it’s to help them to become something more. This creed stands foundation and
base for all previous steps and is ever-lived in each advancing move Miss
Florence Breanka Cornish makes.
