The Student Government Association (SGA)
is a student-governed organization that
provides Governmental,
Legislative and Judicial services for the student body. It is
the official voice of the students and establishes the nexus between
the student body and the administration. The Student Government
Association consists of three distinct branches; the Executive
Branch, the Legislative Branch and the Judicial Branch
Executive Branch
The Executive Branch examines problems
affecting the student body and arrives at possible solutions for those
problems. Executive Branch decisions must be approved by the
Legislative Branch (Senate) before they can take effect.
Likewise,
Legislative Branch actions require Executive Branch approval
before they become valid. The Executive Board
is empowered to veto Legislative Branch proposals or even make
modifications to Bills/Proposals as deemed necessary. The Executive
Branch
is also obligated to enforce all approved bills and policies of the
Association. In so doing, the Executive Branch would have
provided the Governmental framework for the Student Government, thus making it the Governmental institute of
SGA. Membership of the Executive Branch consists
of a President, Vice President, Chief Justice, Miss
Savannah State University, Class Presidents, Business Manager, Executive Secretary, Press
Secretary, and an Editor of the Tigers Roar.
Legislative Branch
The Legislative Branch, also referred to as the
Student Senate is the law
making body of the Student Government Association. It examines problems facing
the student body and makes proposals to the Executive Branch for review and
approval. By virtue of its membership, the Student Senate is the
medium in which specific mechanisms and projects are designed to meet student
needs and concerns. It comprises of representatives from each
recognized club/organization across the campus. Each club/organization must appoint a representative to serve as their Senator in the Student Senate.
Judicial Branch
The Judicial Branch ensures that the actions of the Legislative Branch and
Judicial Branch are consistent with the Constitution and Bylaws of the Student
Government Association. Thus, the Judicial Branch is responsible for the upkeep
of the Student Government Constitution and Bylaws. In so doing, the
Judicial Branch ensures adequate student representation in the Judicial processes of the University.
The Judicial Branch also has a sound relationship with the University's Board of
Student Ethics and other departments associated with Judicial affairs at the
University. It also has the responsibility of
hearing Level III cases involving student infractions and indiscipline,
adjudicating these within the confines of the laws of SGA and Savannah State
University. Membership in the
Judicial Branch consists of a Chief Justice, two (2) Senior Associate Justices
and at least six (6) Associate Justices.
For more information on the roles of any officer
