Goal of PSLSAMP

The Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PSLSAMP) aims at increasing the quality and quantity of underrepresented minority students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculated into programs of graduate study.

The PSLSAMP's First Annual Fall Forum and Research Conference will be held on October 19-21, 2006 hosted by Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) and the University of Georgia. The venue is SPSU, Marietta, GA.

Savannah State University will be represented by a contingent of 40 STEM students which shall include 16 PSLSAMP scholars and 24 MAGEC-STEM scholars. Five faculty members shall accompany them. Many of the scholars will be making paper/poster presentations. This Forum provides these students with an opportunity for the presentation of their scholarly research in competition with peers and educational workshops and seminars.

The conference will include sessions for professional development, academic enhancement, and growth within the PSLAMP programs – as well as, having the opportunity to network with fellow scholars, faculty, and graduate and professional school representatives.

(The PSLSAMP Fall Forum and Research Conference includes a graduate fair sponsored in collaboration with the Georgia Graduate Fairs. This is a week of graduate recruitment events including the University of Georgia, Atlanta University Center, Emory University, and concluding with the PSLSAMP Fall Forum.)

Dr. Valerie Green King from UCF Talks to PSLSAMP & MAGEC-STEM Scholars

Dr. Valerie Green King, Director, Office of Diversity Initiatives, University of Central Florida, visited SSU on Friday, September 29, 2006. Her visit was initiated and organized by Dr. Chellu Chetty, SSU's Executive Director of Sponsored Research.

Dr. King is at present working with members of UCF faculty on a project to provide Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) especially to include ethnic minority and historically underrepresented students in areas of STEM disciplines. She is keen to include SSU's PSLSAMP & MAGEC-STEM scholars to participate in their proposed 10-week summer research experience (especially in areas of engineering & computer science). Thanks to Dr. King, a good foundation has been laid for a fruitful collaboration with UCF and our students shall have good graduate school connections.
