Mission
The mission of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at
Savannah State University is to offer educational, research and outreach
programs that help society understand the interconnected natural world
of which we are a part. In response to challenges posed by increasing
populations, limited resources, and environmental threats, the
Department is committed to developing a vibrant, technically qualified,
intellectually thoughtful, and ethnically diverse community of
individuals able to solve problems and answer questions. By being able
to do so, these individuals will be qualified to pursue higher degrees
and compete in the marketplace for careers in the pure or applied
sciences and mathematics.
Vision 2006-2011
The vision of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at
Savannah State University is to develop and implement new Master’s
degree in Biology, an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science and
Certificate in Forensic Science, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry
(Biochemistry Option), and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and
implement a new certificate program in aquarium science; to distinguish
the Marine Science Program as a “Center of Excellence due to its
strategic location near the ocean; to lead the university in sponsored
research and externally funded programs; to support research and student
development; and to continue to grow such that departmental programs
eventually become nationally/internationally recognized organizational
units.
