Dear Prospective Students:
We are delighted that you are visiting our Department of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics (DNS&M) website. The Department offers five
undergraduate degree programs and a Master’s degree in Marine Sciences.
The undergraduate degrees are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Marine
Science, Environmental Science and Mathematics; and minors in Biology,
Chemistry, Marine Science, and Mathematics are also available. The
Department is one of the largest and most progressive units on campus.
The department is staffed with over 35 full time and adjunct faculty,
most of whom have an earned doctorate degree in their respective
teaching fields. There are currently over 450 majors and the number of
majors is rapidly growing. Relatively a small student/faculty ratio
provides an excellent balanced environment that allows you to have
significant personal contact with your advisor and instructors.
Increased contact with the faculty is known to be a consistent indicator
of academic success. Academic programs preparatory to medical, dental,
nursing, veterinary, forensic sciences and paraprofessional study are
also offered. You will be assigned to an academic advisor who will
familiarize you with departmental curricula and various program
offerings. We take pride in helping our students to succeed and achieve
their utmost potential. We help our students find research training
positions and internships during the summer and academic year.
Currently, there are research collaborations with faculty at the Georgia
Institute of Technology, the University of Georgia, Athens, the Skidaway
Institute of Oceanography and Medical College of Georgia. In addition,
extracurricular activities include honor clubs and sports that will
contribute to your overall development. The Residence Hall, The
University Village, allows students to stay on–campus. The range of
course offerings is sufficiently diverse to allow you to take elective
courses such as neuroscience, endocrinology, animal behavior,
Biocomputing, biochemistry, or biotechnology/molecular biology. There
are several funded grants in the marine and environmental science
programs to broaden your academic experience in the department. I
personally invite you to visit our teaching and research facilities,
especially the new state-of- the-art Drew Griffith Science building and
talk to our prolific faculty who stand ready to guide you in fulfilling
your future aspirations in natural sciences and mathematics. Please take
the next step by making a formal application for admission to the
University by the Sea, Savannah State University and do not hesitate to
contact me if you need additional information about our academic
programs and support services. I am anxious to meet you personally and
help you in planning your future career. Remember our motto is “You
can get anywhere from here”.
Sincerely
Yours,
H.Singh,
