SSU Engineering Technology Degree Programs............ Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program............ Regents' Engineering Transfer Program............ Dual Degree Program............ Coop Programs...........
The Savannah State University is a pioneer in the State of Georgia in offering technical education, and the Department of Engineering and Technology  provides an education of excellence in preparing students for Engineering, Engineering Technology, and Computer Science Technology degrees.

The SSU offers a wide choice of four-year Bachelor's degree programs. In conjuction with Georgia Tech, SSU offers the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Degree Program and Regents' Engineering Transfer Program. These programs lead to the award of an Engineering Degree from Georgia Tech. The SSU continues to offer its traditional programs leading to the Engineering Technology Degree from SSU. Recently, the Computer Science Technology degree program is alo included under the Department of Engineering and Technology. The Dual Degree Program facilitates getting two degrees - an Engineering degree from Georgia Tech and an Engineering Technology degree from SSU.

Our three Engineering Technology Degree Programs (Civil, Electronics and Mechanical) are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Registration for the Professional Engineer

To protect public safety each state establishes laws to license engineers involved in projects affecting public health, safety, and life. The registration process involves written examination, professional work experience, and professional recommendations.

Although it is not the goal of Savannah State University to offer programs to prepare individual to become registered professional engineers, it is possible for a graduate to become registered in Georgia and some other states. The requirements for registration as a professional engineer vary from state to state.

Engineering graduates from ABET-accredited programs are qualified for professional licensing by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

Engineering Technology graduates from TAC of ABET accredited programs are qualified for professional licensing by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
Students interested in this certification may contact the Dr. Pravin Raut of Department of Engineering and Engineering Technology for more information.

Students are encouraged to join appropriate engineering societies to stimulate their interest in professional activities, to promote their pursuit for life-long learning, and to expose them to professional conduct and ethics. The Departmenthas, at present, the following student organizations:

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
The American Society of Civil engineers (ASCE)
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (AMSE)
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

Cooperative Education Program

The Cooperative Education Program is available to students in the department. The program enables students to gain work experience in industry as paid employees during their college tenure. The program is coordinated through the Office of Cooperative Education. The program is available to students who have acquired at least 30 semester hours, including at least five courses in the major, are proficient in a computer language, have a satisfactory academic record, and meet the job specifications of the employer.

Students work in industry and attend college during alternate quarters or as arranged. To remain in the program, they must maintain creditable records at both places. Students must register for the appropriate cooperative education course
each quarter they are employed and must observe all applicable regulations of the cooperating company.

Students pursuing the coop program should expect their matriculation to extend beyond four years.

The University does not guarantee the availability of coop stations, duties, or compensation. At the conclusion of the coop experience, students are not obligated to accept employment with the cooperating companies nor are the companies obligated to offer them employment. Students interested in this program should consult with their advisors.
