Dr. Alex Kalu Adds Namibia to his list!
Dr. Alex Kalu, Professor
Dept of Engineering Technology
Dr. Alex Kalu, Professor, Department of Engineering Technology, has received a grant for SSU from United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP) (and USAID) to support a partnership with the University of Namibia.
The grant ($55000) will be for Dr. Kalu for conducting research studies on "Optimizing Economic Recovery from Devil's Claw - A Natural Resource in Namibia for Rural Inhabitants".
Dr. Alex Kalu has already research and outreach activities (externally funded) in 5 countries (South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland, Nigeria and Ghana) in the African continent.
His other grant projects include:
- Renewable Energy for Empowerment of Mozambique Women and Girls (REEMWaG)
- Renewable Energy Technology Utilization (NHRETU), and
- Renewable Energy for African Development Projects (REFAD)
These projects have initiated vibrant development activities in these countries in the African continent. They have also provided for initiating interest and active involvement of SSU students and local high school students in engineering and energy areas.

SSU's Footprints in Mozambique!
This Pyramid Hybrid Village Power System was designed by Savannah State University Engineers in collaboration with Engineers from Durban Institute of Technology.
Two units of the system with a total (maximum output) capacity of 25kW are installed at Banga Village in Mozambique as part of SSU sustainable development project.
This Project was funded is in partnership with Eduardo Mondlane University and funded by UNCF-SP/USAID.

Chetty and Baker Receive Role Model Awards!
 
Chellu S. Chetty John Baker
Dr. Chellu S. Chetty, Professor of Biology in the Department of Natural Sciences & Mathematics
, along with Mr. John Lee Baker, a 1996 graduate of SSU, received the Minority Access National Faculty Award at the Role Models
Awards banquet on September 19, 2004 in Washington, DC. John Baker received his BS in Biology from SSU and MS in Biology &
Neuroendocrinology from Fisk University. He is at present a doctoral student in the Psychology Department of Rutgers University in Newark, NJ.
The annual Role Models Conference is sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health and
Minority Access, Inc. It focuses a national spotlight on individuals who have excelled in producing and supporting minority researchers,
particularly in biomedical sciences and health-related fields.

April Whitehead (Civil Engineering Technology Major) Receives $3000 Scholarship!
|
April Whitehead, majoring in Civil Engineering Technology with a minor in Computer Science Technology,
is the recipient of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia scholarship of $3000.
SSU President Carlton E. Brown, Fred Kitchens, Executive Director of Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia, and State Senator Regina Thomas attended
the reception held to honor April Whitehead on October 27, 2004 at Savannah State University.

The Regional Workshop for Savannah/Chatham County K-12 Teachers and Counselors, organized by SECME in conjunction with
MAGEC-STEM, on October 28-29, 2004 at Savannah State University was attended by 80 educators, parents and students.
According to Edward D. Aebischer (Program Manager, SECME), "One goal for us certainly was to whet the appetite for more such teacher professional
development in Savannah/Chatham County and neighboring school systems - and to establish SECME school implementation as a means to improve student
achievement, aspirations toward STEM studies and careers, and recognition of MAGEC-STEM as an academic path."

Dr. Joyce Payne, Founder of Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, Director of the Human Resources and Minority Programs
for the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and recently elected to AARP Board of Directors,
will be the Speaker at the SSU's 165th Commencement Ceremony to be held at 10:00 AM on December 11, 2004.
Dr. Payne received her master's and doctorate from Atlanta University. She was awarded an honorary doctorate
from Lincoln University and a Presidential Leadership award from Delaware University.
