Our Marine Science Graduate Receives Award!
Sue Ebanks, who graduated recently with a MS in Marine Science, won the Best Student Oral Presentation Award
at the Spring Meeting of the Southeastern Estuarine Research Society Conference. Her talk was entitled "An assessment of bopyrid isopod prevalence in
four estuaries and its effect on tide-related activity patterns of the grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio”.
Dr. Carla Curran, Assistant Professor of Marine Science in the Department of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, was the Thesis Advisor of Sue Banks.

MAGEC-STEM Open House:
The MAJEC-STEM Open House for Cohort II students was held on April 23, 2005 at Jordan Auditorium. It was well attended by high school students and their parents/guardians who were briefed on the goals, objectives and operational details of the MAJEC-STEM Project by the PI (Dr. Joseph H. Silver), Program Director (Dr. Chellu S. Chetty), and Coordinators.
A six-week summer residential camp will be conducted from June 4 to July 16, 2005. Thirty seven students, who have gained admission to STEM disciplines
in the 2005-Fall Semester, will attend this summer enrichment program. The participants will receive $1000 stipend and free lodging & boarding.
They will also receive a lap-top computer and an annual $1500 stipend for the next 4 years.

Summer Undergraduate Research Training (SURT) Program:
Twenty five cohort I students received 2005 SURT internships at an awards ceremony held on March 23, 2005.
President Dr. Carlton E. Brown and Dr. Joseph H. Silver, PI, MAGEC-STEM, presented the awards. Fourteen COST faculty and six GTREP faculty are serving as
research mentors for these students. Each participating student receives $1,200 stipend and free housing during the summer.
The students will present their research findings at national conferences in Fall 2005 in Atlanta, GA. and in Spring 2006 in Baltimore, MD

A 5-day Workshop to introduce high school students (rising 11th graders) to the broad spectrum of engineering and to career opportunities in engineering and technology.

A 8-week program to expose promising high school students to SAT preparation and career exploration. These students will receive K-credit that can be used toward their graduation if they enroll at Savannah State University after high school graduation.
