State Labor Commissioner, Michael L. Thurmond, to deliver Commencement Address
Mr. Michael L. Thurmond, Commissioner, Georgia Deprtment of Labor, will deliver the address at the 170th Savannah State University's Commencement on May 12, 2007 at Tiger Arena.
The Honors Awards Ceremony of COST was held on April 18, 2007 in the Ballroom at King-Frazier Student Center.
With Dr. Babajide Familoni, Dean of COST, delivering the keynote address, the program included participation and presentations by the Interim president Dr. Julius Scott, Interim VPAA, Dr. Jane Gates, and student representatives.
The following were recognized:
Medallion Scholars: Gold (1), Silver (33), Bronze (85)
Blue Ribbon Scholars: President's List (17), Dean's List (80), Honor Roll (170)

Gold Medallion Scholar, Robert Hagedorn, a Computer Science Technology Major, won the Second Place in the TechFest 2007 Student Project Competition organized by The Creative Coast Initiative on April 27, 2007 at Georgia Tech Campus, Savannah.
Robert Hagedorn was the leader of the project "RFID Helps the Blind" which included three more students: Ebony Davis, Scotty McKenzie, and Santreias Paschal.
In the project, they used an RFID (Radio-frequency identification) reader to effectively allow a blind person to hear what they are about to touch.
The project guide was Dr. Asad Yousuf, Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology.
NOTE:
The Creative Coast Initiative (TCCi) is designed to grow and attract knowledge businesses to add to Savannah’s growing higher-wage economic capacity. Since its inception two years ago, TCCi has been instrumental in assisting fourteen companies to locate in Savannah and hire employees in the area.

Kenneth Sajwan, Professor in the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
has recently presented Marjorie Gardner Lecture on Dioxins and Human Health at the 2007 National Science Teachers
Association Annual Conference at Saint Louis, March 28-April1 1. Dr. Sajwan presented his lecture as a part of his
2006 Society of College Teachers Association Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teacher Award.
Dr. Kenneth Sajwan has also been selected by the International Society of Trace Element Biogeochemistry (ISTEB) to
organize a symposium on Coal and Coal Combustion Byproducts at the 9th International Conference on the Biogeochemistry
of Trace Elements to be held in Beijing, China, July 14-19, 2007.
Dr. Asad Yousuf, Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology received a grant award of $30000 for his proposal to the Junior Engineering Technical Society for Junior Engineering and Technology Summer Program (Co-PI: Dr. Mohamad Mustafa)
Dr. Asad Yousuf has also received grant award of $7500 for "An integrated project-based course in Mathematics and Engineering" (Co-PI: Dr. Mohamad Mustafa and Dr. Shinemin Lin)
