    Dean's Message

A warm welcome to the College of Sciences and Technology (COST) at the Savannah State University (SSU)!
The focus of the COST can be described by the following mission statement from our strategic plan:

The mission of the COST is to deliver high quality education, scholarship and research in sciences, engineering and technology. While the College is committed to equip the students with the knowledge and applications of sciences and technology to enable the region and nation to excel with a competitive edge, it is also committed to values associated with human well-being, environmental quality and responsible citizenship. The College shall promote interdisciplinary working internally and healthy collaborative work and community service externally.

We live in an ever-changing and ever-challenging world which is a product of sciences and technology, and as we enter the new millennium, the sciences and technology will play a far greater role than ever before in determining the road into the future.

The College's programs are organized administratively into 4 departments (Engineering Technology, Natural Sciences & Mathematics, AROTC & NROTC). These departments offer strong vibrant Bachelor of Science degree programs in 8 major fields.

Our major programs are up-to-date and challenging. The College collaborates with Georgia Tech in offering the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program, Regents Engineering Transfer Program and Dual degree Program. The graduate program in Marine Sciences has started in Fall 2002. Our College is also an active partner in the Yamacraw Project.

Our programs are designed to provide students a combination of fundamental knowledge and lifelong learning skills that will prepare graduates for a successful career in their chosen field. At the same time our curricula give students the necessary practical skills so that they can be productive from their very start on the job. At the COST, we pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching and research. An aggressive emphasis on teaching is one of the strengths found in all of the programs offered by the College. While research and consulting are important, our faculty members have as their primary objective the sharing of their knowledge and expertise with students. The faculty members are dedicated to teaching and they work together to provide an exceptional nurturing educational environment to make the overall undergraduate experience a positive one. We are ensuring that the faculty has the technological resources and expertise to create the most effective learning environment for their students.

We encourage students to aim high and to have ambitious goals and aspirations. The curricula are rigorous and not easy; but our students succeed because of high quality teaching, advisement, individualized attention, and extensive faculty-student interaction in an environment conducive to learning. Class sizes are small and the faculty members are ready and eager to assist the students in developing their full potential. The courses are offered during the day-time or evening.

We are committed to maintain and improve our outstanding status in the quality of faculty, quality of programs, quality of facilities, and quality of graduates.

We aim to strengthen relationships with both our internal and external constituents that will lead to increased financial support and advocacy for COST's education and research initiatives. I acknowledge with thanks the generous support from our alumni and friends and commend them for stepping forward to assist us. I take this opportunity to plead all - industries, alumni, faculty, staff and friends - to help the COST meet our challenges through an increased investment, the need for which is greater now than ever before. Supplementing the state fund by generous private funds is vital if the COST is to continue to enhance its degree programs and to keep up with the technology necessary to adequately educate tomorrow's professional workforce.

I invite you to browse the college's web site and those of the departments linked to it as well as the other pages of SSU website to learn more about the University and all the opportunities it has to offer. If you are in need of further information or if you have any comments/ suggestions, please feel free to call us, email or better yet, visit us to meet our faculty and staff and tour our departments and facilities.

As the Dean of the College, it is for me a pleasure to have the opportunity to serve you, our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.

Good luck and good "surfing"!

Sincerely,

Dr. Babajide Familoni
Dean, COST
