3 Academic Policies and Services of Interest to the Faculty

3.1 Library Policies

Along with the expected print and non-print resources, the library offers a range of services including interlibrary loan, computers with access to Peachnet, Galileo, and the Internet, and an online catalogue for Savannah State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, and Georgia Southern University. Faculty may request instruction in library use, and they may place library holdings or personal materials on reserve. Faculty members use their identification cards to check out materials and are responsible for returning all materials charged to them by the end of the semester.

The African American Collection is housed on the second floor. Copy facilities are located on both floors.

Faculty members are responsible for developing the library collection, especially for the degree program in which they teach. The library honors order requests if funds are available. Book orders may be placed via computer from individual faculty offices or submitted directly to the librarian.

Complete information on the library and access to information regarding library holdings are also available by computer from faculty offices by accessing the library's web site.

3.2 FAX Service

FAX service is available to faculty in most academic offices. Faculty should check with the departmental secretary or department chair to determine departmental rules regarding the use of fax service.

3.3 Computer Services

Computing support for students, staff, and faculty is controlled and maintained by staff in computer services and information technology (CSIT). Faculty offices are equipped with microcomputers that provide access to the campus network, E-mail, the library, Peachnet, and the Internet. Students have free access to computer laboratories in the following buildings: Jordan Hall (206 and 208), Whiting Hall (103, 132, and 203), Payne Hall (115 and 207), and Hubert-D (103, 109, and 111).

3.3.1 Computer Learning Center

The Computer Learning Center (CLC), located on the ground floor of Hubert-D, is a computer training and testing facility for faculty and staff. CLC computer experts schedule regular training and assessment sessions on computer hardware and software. Participants in the training sessions receive certificates of completion as evidence of continuing professional development. There is no cost to the participants for this training.

3.4 Secretarial Services

The university provides secretarial services through the departmental secretaries.

3.5 Print Shop and Copy Services

The university provides printing and mail series through its Campus Services Center located in Morgan Annex. The staff provide duplicating (Xerox and risograph), printing (letterhead, brochures, envelopes), and mail services. The cost of using these services is charged to departmental operating budgets. Faculty obtain permission in their departmental offices. Approval forms must be submitted with the materials to be printed or copied.

3.6 Academic Computing

The computer utilization committee reviews broad recommendations for purchases of computer hardware and software. Committee membership is specified in Section 1.10.2.7. Decisions of the committee are transmitted to the president as recommendations. The president reviews the recommendations and transmits approved EDP requests to the vice chancellor for information technology of the University System of Georgia. When the vice chancellor approves and returns the requests, purchases are completed through the normal procurement process.

3.7 Bookstore

Faculty are responsible for ordering texts through departmental offices, usually early in the semester preceding a scheduled course.

3.8 Reserving Meeting Rooms

Rooms on campus may be reserved by means of a space reservation form, available from either the student affairs office or the student activities office. Requests must be approved by the faculty advisor (if the request is from a student organization), the building director, and the vice president for student affair.
