Advisement

Has the responsibility to develop and recommend the standards and procedures for operations of the Advisement Center and recommend effective means for review and improvement operations.

The objectives of the committee are therefore, to

  • review existing advisement procedures for purposes of recommending changes.
  • recommend changes in policies and practices in advisement.
  • become proactive in the implementation of these policies.
  • develop, implement, and revises an annual general plan for advisement for CLASS in consultation with the
  • faculty, chairs, and the Dean.

The committee shall meet at least twice each semester and as needed.

Membership on the committee shall be made up of at least one (1) member elected from the faculty of each of the teaching units within CLASS and shall serve for a two (2) year rotating term.

The committee shall report to the general faculty of CLASS. The committee should coordinate its work with the university-wide Advisement Council.

Black History Month

Has the responsibility of recognizing and celebrating the collective ingenuity, creativity, cultural and political experience of Africans and people of African descent who helped shape the African American heritage. The committee may carry out its responsibility through a variety of programs: lectures, exhibitions, banquets, and cultural activities throughout the month of February to commemorate the occasion. These activities do not preclude recognizing African American accomplishment year round. February is National Black History Month.

Buildings and Grounds

The procedures for the operation of the Building and Grounds Committee are as follows:

The purpose of the committee is to advise the dean as to the proper use and maintenance of facilities by the college.

The specific objectives are

  • to act as a sounding board for complaints and suggestions which will be reported to the CLASS faculty for input and then turn them over to the Dean for implementation;
  • to learn what is presently being done on campus regarding construction, etc., in order to coordinate the college's efforts with those projects;
  • to evaluate and recommend appropriate and efficient space utilization of buildings used by the College;
  • to evaluate conditions of buildings, and make recommendations on repair, renovation, beautifying, and general upkeep of buildings and grounds.

The committee will solicit faculty ideas and opinions.

Catalog

Shall be responsible for editing and updating catalog changes database received from the department and transmitting catalog to the Office of the Dean no later than the end of March of each academic year.

The function of the committee is to serve as a catalyst for change, a springboard for groundbreaking thinking on research, policy, and practice that impact local, national, and global communities. The Futures Committee will:

  • Design projects and new programs
  • Identify strategies
  • Develop approaches to provide positive change
  • Make recommendation to CLASS, Central Administration, and the Faculty Senate

Membership on this committee consists of a two-year term.

Curriculum

The procedures for the effective and efficient operations of the CLASS Curriculum Review are as follows:

The purpose of the Curriculum Review Committee is to receive recommendations for changes within existing programs and for the development of new ones. This includes the review of descriptions of new courses and making other agreed-upon recommendations for changes and additions.

The specific objectives of the committee are to carry out and track the stages of approval for curriculum changes according to the following procedures:

  • The committee will evaluate syllabus and review proposed program changes for consistency and concurrence with the stated mission of the college and university.
  • The committee will report to the CLASS faculty at a regular or called meeting where the proposed changes and additions will be discussed for approval.

The proposed changes and additions must be voted on and the proposed recommendations should then be presented to the Dean for submission to the Faculty Senate Curriculum and New Programs Committee (see Faculty Handbook).

The respective departments that submit changes should be copied by the Dean when the materials are sent to the Curriculum and New Programs Committee of the Faculty Senate.

Upon presentation of changes to the Faculty Senate, the Curriculum and New Programs Committee should copy the departments concerned that the material has been forwarded to the Senate.

When the changes have been approved by the Faculty Senate (as the representative body of the faculty), the changes shall then be referred to the VPAA, who should then refer the changes to the registrar, the president, and the Board of Regents for implementation.

The VPAA then notifies the respective departments of the final action.

Membership on the committee shall include at least one faulty representative elected from each department of the college, who shall serve a two-year term with half of the members rotating annually.

The committee shall report to the general faculty of CLASS and present a written document of their work which shall be filed.

The committee will meet twice per semester and when needed. The committee shall coordinate its meetings to correspond with the submission deadlines of the Faculty Senate Curriculum and New Programs Committee. Meeting times and the venue will be determined at the beginning of each semester by the membership.

Educational Policies

The procedures for the operation of the Educational Policies Committee are as follows:

The purpose of the committee is to develop educational policies that will sustain and maintain a coherent instructional program.

the objectives of the committee are, therefore; to

  • assume responsibility for a challenging instructional program and productive relations between faculty and students,
  • conduct evaluations and other procedures that make it possible to determine the quality of the academic program, instruction, and student performance;
  • establish the proper relationship between curricular and extra-curricular activities; and
  • help set graduation standards.

The committee shall recommend to the CLASS faculty for approval and adoption such rules and regulations as will facilitate and improve the academic operations of the College.

The committee shall promote a sound testing program throughout the college. Through appropriate use of the Language Skill Laboratory.

It shall advise the faculty of services regarding the improvement of writing and reading skills for the college's students.

All proceedings of the Educational Policies Committee except those dealing with routine matters shall be presented to the CLASS faculty at regular or called meetings, and its work appropriately recorded. The report shall become part of the CLASS faculty proceedings.

The membership of the Educational Policies Committee shall include the Dean, department chairs, and faculty representatives elected from each area of specialization within the college, along with at least two student representatives. The committee shall select its own chair and secretary.

The committee shall meet at least once per semester. The meeting times and venue shall be selected by the committee.

Grade Challenge

Handbook (Ad Hoc)

Has numerous responsibilities which include, but are not limited to:

  • reviewing annually all policy and procedures statement in the CLASS Handbook;
  • monitoring the application of the procedures and policies in the CLASS Handbook, and as appropriate, to recommended changing any misapplications of the procedures and policies described;
  • working with the Office of the Dean in updating the Handbook each spring in accordance with the policy described in the SSU Faculty Handbook, in preparation for distribution to all faculty the following fall;
  • monitoring the transition involved in any changes in the faculty governance structure described therein.

Faculty may serve on this committee for a two-year term.

Library

The procedures for the effective operation of the Library Committee are as follows:

The purpose of the Library Committee is to maintain and improve the availability and resources of the library for the effective use of the faculty and the students.

The objectives of the committee are

  • to meet with the library director regularly, at least once per semester;
  • to work directly with the library staff; and
  • to improve the relationship between faculty and the library as a teaching aid and students and the library as a learning aid.

The committee shall develop and maintain a website for the SSU Library collection.

The committee shall solicit recommendations for new acquisitions from faculty and shall develop and provide a list of new acquisitions each semester.

The committee will develop for use in the core curriculum and majors a list of texts, journals, bibliographic materials, audiovisuals, videos, DVD's CD's, and CD-roms.

The membership shall consist of volunteer faculty from each teaching unit in the college. Membership should rotate so that the work of the committee will have continuity.

The committee shall meet at least twice per semester and shall record its proceedings and report its work to the CLASS faculty at regular and called meetings.

Personnel

Shall be composed of one faculty member elected from each of the five departmental units in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Committee members will serve a two-year term.

The Personnel Committee shall be responsible for polices and procedures relating to promotion and tenure. The committee shall make recommendations concerning promotion and tenure, pre-tenure, and post-tenure to the dean after careful review of each faculty member's work and shall be governed by the policies of the Board of Regents, the university and the college.

Recruitment

Has the responsibility of fostering and assisting the development of retention and recruitment initiatives coordinated by each departmental unit within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and recruiting outstanding students to SSU who may major in one of the academic areas offered in CLASS. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Holding conferences-one held during each academic semester.
  • Visiting high schools and community churches.
  • Contacting admitted students, greeting students at receptions, speaking at recruitment events, and meeting with prospective students as much possible.
  • Promoting good advising practices.

Strategic Planning

The procedures for the Strategic Planning Committee are as follows:

The purpose of the committee is to develop a systematic planning process for the college that incorporates academics programs, fiscal matters, facilities, and personnel.

The objectives of the committee are, therefore, to

  • determine sources of information for effective long-range planning for the college;
  • provide procedures for making long-range projections in several phases of the planning process;
  • integrate department plans with college plans;
  • insure the consistency of the long-range plans of the college with those of the university; and
  • develop a monitoring system to insure the efficiency of the on-going and long-range planning process.

The committee will meet each semester to insure the efficiency of the on-going and long-range planning process.

Membership of the committee will include one elected member from each teaching unit within CLASS.

Women's History Month

Has the responsibility of sponsoring programs, special events, and exhibits illustrating the significance of women's contribution and concerns during the month of March. These activities do not preclude recognizing and celebrating women's accomplishments year round. March is National Women's History Month.
