The department's faculty considers how it might improve its services over the next five years:
  • Perhaps the greatest improvement will result from making greater use of assessment information. This will allow the faculty to make improvements in individual courses and to assess the effectiveness of the current curriculum.
  • Already a leader in the university's internationalization effort, the department will continue its role in study abroad programs and efforts to bring more international scholars and students to the campus.
  • The department will work to attract and retain more non-traditional students and will continue to schedule courses at times convenient for non-traditional students.
  • In conjunction with the university's P-16 initiative, the department will strengthen its ties with local public schools, particularly with Sol C. Johnson High School and Myers Middle School with which both the department and university have had long-standing ties.
  • Ongoing review of the curriculum will ensure that the department's course offerings reflect national standards of excellence and fulfills the needs of our students.
  • Contacts will be established with the local employers of our graduates to ensure that graduates possess the skills and knowledge employers consider important.
  • The department will explore becoming the university's center for Alternative Dispute Resolution by training some of its faculty members.
  • Renewed effort will be given to the importance of writing in all course.
Objectives
To provide introductory courses in history, geography, sociology, and psychology for both general knowledge and a foundation for advanced classes;
