PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND URBAN STUDIES
 


The Department of Political Science, Public Administration, and Urban Studies offers two undergraduate degree programs--political science and homeland security and emergency management -- for majors and minors. Graduate students may choose the Master of Public Administration (MPA) or the Master of Science in Urban Studies (MSUS). A well-qualified faculty offers courses on the African American political experience comparative politics, international relations, the American judicial system, research methods, political theory, and constitutional law. Students may elect to focus on pre-law, international affairs, nonprofit management certification, or teacher certification.

New Scholarly Publications by Dr. Benn L. Bongang and Dr. Deden Rukmana

Adonis & Abbey Publishers of London have just announced the publication of “Voices in the Dark: Mavericks, Censorship & Freedom of Expression in Cameroon” by Dr. Benn L. Bongang. This is a book chapter in Democracy and Culture: An African Perspective (2008) edited by Lioba Moshi & Abdulahi A. Osman of University of Georgia, Athens.

Two articles by Dr. Deden Rukmana have been accepted for publication: (1) Where the homeless children and youth come from: A study of the residential origins of the homeless in Miami-Dade County, Florida in Children and Youth Services Review; and (2) The Growth of Jakarta Metropolitan Area and the Sustainability of Urban Development in Indonesia in The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability

Dr. Behrooz Kalantari was awarded an Outstanding Liaison Award from the Board of Regents

Kalantari

Dr. Behrooz Kalantari is the recipient of the only annual "Outstanding Liaison Award" in 2008 among thirty-five universities in the University of System Georgia. The award was given to Dr. Kalantari during the annual system-wide meeting of the Campus Liaisons that was conducted by the Board of Regents at Augusta State University in Augusta Georgia.

Dr. Kalantari was recognized for his contributions and efforts as the ADR Liaison at Savannah State University. He has held this position since December 2003. Behrooz Kalantari has also published several books and articles in Human Resource Management, Organizational Ethics, Strategic Management, and Comparative Politics since joining SSU in 1997.

As the ADR Liaison, Kalantari chairs the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee on Campus. The ADR Liaisons work with the the Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (CNCR) at the Board of Regents to manage conflicts at the 35 universities within the University System of Georgia. CNCR was created in 1995 as part of an initiative to institutionalize conflict prevention and resolution at the system-wide universities and colleges.

DPSPAUS
will present a guest lecture by Dr. Ashenafi G. Woldegebriel, a Fulbright scholar at teh Department of Urban Design and Planning, University of Washington and an assistant professor of urban design and planning at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, on Friday, February 29th , 2008 at 10:00 AM - noon in the Conference Room Whiting Hall.

Dr. Woldegebriel will give a lecture titled "The Challenges of Planning and Building Sustainable Urban Communities in Developing Countries."
