MAJOR

The Department of Mass Communications offers the following areas of concentration leading to a bachelor of arts degree in mass communications.

Print Journalism
Students who concentrate in this area have a wealth of knowledge to draw from through participation in professional media internships when they reach advanced academic status. Working on the Tiger’s Roar, the university’s award-winning newspaper,   and  the Tiger’s Roar Online, provides valuable experience in newspaper writing, editing and formatting. In addition to classroom and online instruction by educators who are experts in their fields, selected classes are taught by local working newspaper  photographers, journalists and editors who daily engage in the craft of journalism. Two state-of-the-art Mac Labs are available to students who concentrate in print journalism.

Radio and Television
Students concentrating in radio and television will have exposure to a modern production environment complete with a  state-of-the-art high tech television studio and production room, G-5 Mac laboratories and a non-linear editing laboratory (with Avid and Premiere formats).  Students have all of the equipment necessary to produce a variety of creative programs for television, radio and film.  The video production studio and lab contain high-resolution video cameras, a news set and backdrop, a lighting grid, teleprompters, multiple non-linear editing stations and a satellite downlink. In addition, the department’s majors may work at Savannah State’s popular radio station, WHCJ-FM 90.3, in various capacities, such as production technicians, on-air talent and as news producers, to gain expertise that leads to careers in professional media.

Public Relations and Advertising
Public relations and advertising serve as a management function and as a conduit to an organization and its internal and external stakeholders. Organizations use public relations and advertising to influence and educate target audiences about their goals and purposes.
The department’s public relations and  advertising concentration prepares students for careers in public relations, advertising and marketing.   Students are trained to become creative thinkers, planners, writers, analysts,  policy makers, communication directors, publications managers and to pursue professional careers in all areas of communications  that call for skills in strategic planning, writing, special event planning, and problem resolution through applied research and communications techniques.  Students who concentrate in public relations have access to state-of-the-art computer labs, including a G-5 Mac lab (with PhotoShop, After Effects, Illustrator and InDesign software), a Digi ProTools Audio lab, a non-linear editing lab, an I Mac lab and  a fully digital television production studio.  Students intern with professional public relations and/or advertising organizations when they acquire junior or senior status, providing them with real-world experiences.
