GENERAL ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
MAJOR PROGRAM OF STUDY || MINOR REQUIREMENTS

Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Arts

The English Language and Literature Program offers courses leading to both the minor and the baccalaureate degree (B.A.) in English.

Majors and minors in English receive outstanding preparation for a variety of careers involving diverse aspects of reading, writing, research, and presentation skills. English majors are well-suited for further study and careers in professional or technical writing, law, education, linguistics, and public service, among many others. Internship opportunities are available to better acquaint students with professions of interest.

GENERAL ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

As for all majors, candidates for the baccalaureate degree in English Language and Literature must satisfy the requirements for the reading and essay writing components of the Regents' Testing Program (RTP).

English majors must also complete 15 hours in a minor or concentration area of their choosing.
Senior English majors must take the departmental exit examination.
Each English major is assigned an academic advisor by the chair of the department. Students are required to be advised by their advisor prior to registering each semester.
Students must earn a minimum grade of "C" in all major courses and all courses listed under Area F in the English major grid.

Students must complete and submit for approval an Application for Degree form at least 2 semesters prior to their intended graduation date.  The form may be obtained online through SSU’s Forms Online page.
