From West Broad Street to MLK, Jr. Blvd

The ConEd Building

The McKelvey-Powell Building, located at 714 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd has housed many successful and important businesses. Built by William McKelvey and Edward O. Powell in 1926, the McKelvey-Powell Building was originally the home of a barbershop and funeral parlor before becoming the West Broad Street YMCA. The West Broad Street YMCA was vital to the black community in Savannah. During World War II, the building served as the USO center for black soldiers. Today, the McKelvey-Powell Building is being renovated to house the CON-ED Family Resource Center. When the restoration process is complete the CON-ED Family Resource Center will offer programs designed to help improve the lives of families that live in the neighborhoods near Connors Temple Baptist Church. Connors Temple Baptist Church is an affiliate of the CON-ED Family Resource Center headed by Rev. B.R. Mitchell, pastor of Connors Temple and president of CON-ED, Inc.
