The Collier Family

Dr. Henry M. Collier, Sr. was born in Augusta, GA June 12, 1889. He attended Georgia State Collage and went on to graduate from Shaw University in North Carolina. He received his Medical Doctorates from Meharry Medical Collage, Nashville, Tennessee in 1913. Dr. Collier‚s office was located at 707 West Broad Street where he practiced for forty-seven years. He was President of the South Atlantic Medical Society, an organization for Negro Physicians in 1952. (Elmore 2001)

Dr. Henry M. Collier, Jr. was born in Savannah GA. He graduated from Savannah State University to go on Meharry Medical Collage to graduate. In 1942 he joined his fathers practice. His brother Dr. Charles Collier graduated from the Meharry Medical Collage of Dentistry also returned to Savannah to practice at his Office. He practiced forty years as an Orthodontist. (Elmore 42)

Dr. Nathanial Collier, brother of Dr. Henry Collier Sr., practiced in Savannah for thirty-two years. The Collier Family has contributed over 100 years of medical and dental service to Savannah‚s African American. (Elmore 2001)

The Jamerson Family

Dr. J.W. Jamerson, Sr. graduated from the Meharry Medical Collage Dental School. Dr. Jamerson began practicing dentistry in 1905. He was a member of the Southern Medical Associates‚ of Colored Doctors and retired at age fifty-eight. His son Dr. J.W. Jamerson Jr., also graduated from the same dental school and returned to Savannah to join his father. Their offices were located in the Wage Earners Bank at West Broad and Alice Streets. The Jamerson legacy continues today with Dr. J.W. Jamersons‚ III, orthodontist office located at 315 E. Henry St. The Jamerson Family has served Savannah‚s community for well over century. The Tyson Family

Dr. Stephen M. McDew began his practice in Savannah in 1923 after practicing medicine in Ocilla, Georgia for thirteen years. He earned his M.D. from the Meharry Medical Collage after studying at Atlanta University and Walden College. His practice was located in the Savannah Pharmacy building located at 719 ∏ West Broad St. His son, Dr. Stephen M. McDew Jr., also earned his M.D. from Meharry Medical College after attending what is now Savannah State University. (Elmore 2001)

Dr. Clarence B. Tyson and son, Dr.William G. Tyson practiced medicine side by side, in the Wage Earners Bank at West Broad and Alice Streets. The duo also worked in the free Cuyler School clinics established by the local Federation of Colored Women. (Elmore 2001)

Dr. Phillip W. Cooper‚s office was located at 530 West Broad Street. He was Secretary of the South Atlantic Medical Society in1952.

Dr. F. S. Belcher resided at 712 West Broad St in 1952.

Dr. Milton D. Bryant‚s office was located at 458 ∏ West Broad St. in 1952.

Additional African American Physicians in Savannah, Georgia:

Dr. S. Palmer Lloyd was the first African American physician in Savannah in 1895. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in May 1893. (Hoskins 1989)

Dr. Cornelius McKane and his wife Dr. Alice R. Woody McKane meet and married in Savannah. Together they owned and operated the first African American Hospital, The McKane Hospital for Women and Children. (Hoskins 1989)

Dr. Phillip E. Love graduated from Leonard Medical Collage, Raleigh N.C. He was the second Negro Physician to work at Charity Hospital. (Hoskins 2002)

Dr. A. T. Augusta headed the Federal Government‚s Freedman‚s Hospital in 1865 was one of the first African American medical doctors to practice in Savannah. (Hoskins 2001)

Dr. Patrick Henry Coker‚s office listed in the colored directory as being located at 21 York Street.

Dr. J. H. Bugg treated 224 white patients in 1895. He earned his M.D. from Shaw University in North Carolina (Hoskins 1989)
