Lady Tigers drop first two at USC Upstate Tournament

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Donna Jenkins led the Savannah State University volleyball team with 13 kills in two games as the Tigers opened up their season at the University of South Carolina Upstate volleyball tournament.

SSU (0-2) showed a lot of determination despite losing to USC Upstate and Wofford in the first day of competition. In game one, Upstate defeated the Lady Tigers 30-10, 30-12 and 30-15. Jenkins, who sat out last season, made her debut leading the Tigers in kills with six. Sophomore Shawannda McClain and freshman Brittany Lewis led the team in sets and digs. McClain, the back-up setter, led SSU with seven assists, while Lewis had a team-high four digs.

Upstate’s Jessica Ambrisco had a game-high eight kills, while Morgan Bucciferro and Holly Mauldin combined for 27 assists for Upstate.

In game two, the Tigers improved but were still defeated by Wofford, 30-16, 30-17, 30-13. Once again Jenkins led SSU with seven kills. Junior setter April Hayes had a team-high 10 digs and 13 sets.

Wofford’s Brittany Thompson led everyone with a game-high 11 kills on 23 attacks. Setter Joanna Suddith had a game high 31 assists. Two Wofford players finished with double-digit digs.

SSU will take on Navy tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
