SSU defeats Fort Valley in home finale
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Even though the Savannah State University volleyball team had no seniors to acknowledge during their last home game, the juniors made a strong statement as veterans Satin Kinsey and Donna Jenkins combined for 32 kills in SSU’s four-game victory over Fort Valley State on Monday night.
SSU improved their record to 5-24 on the season, while Fort Valley dropped to 7-24.
The teams matched up well with three of the four games being decided by just two points. In game one SSU squeezed by Fort Valley 30-28 then defeated the Wildcats easily in game two, 30-20.
But game three saw a tougher Fort Valley team as the Wildcats edged the Tigers 30-28. Game four was another close game with the scored knotted at 28 SSU scored the final two points on a botched serve by Fort Valley’s leading hitter Deborah Jones then a kill by Kinsey.
Kinsey finished with 13 kills on 19 attacks with a career high .632 hitting percentage. Jenkins recorded 19 kills, one ace and one dig. Freshman setter April Hayes led everyone with 52 assists.
Fort Valley’s Jones had a game-high 24 kills.
SSU will wrap up the 2005 season in North Carolina taking on North Carolina A&T in Greensboro on Friday, November 11 then Campbell University in Buies Creek on Saturday, November 12. |
