Smith Named Defensive Player of the Year

SAVANNAH, Ga- Savannah State senior point guard Ivy Smith was named the 2007-08 Division I All-Independent Team Defensive Player of the Year.
In addition to being named Defensive Player of the Year, the Athens, Georgia native was also voted to the Division I All-Independent Second Team.
Patrice Robinson was named to the All-Newcomer Team and received honorable mention honors for the All-Independent Team.
Smith started 27 of 29 games and led SSU in scoring (13.8 points per game), field goals made (125), 3-point field goals made (36), free throws made (114), assists (115), steals (106) and minutes played (32.5 per game). Smith was second on the team in rebounds with 123.
Robinson, a junior forward from Swainsboro, Georgia averaged 9.2 points per game and led the team with 6.7 rebounds per game. She led the team in blocks (35) and was second in field goal percentage (48 percent), field goals made (116), minutes (28.3 per game) and third in steals (40) and made free throws (36). Robinson started 27 of the 29 games she played in.
SSU finished the 2007-08 season with a 14-15 record.
