Savannah State Beats Stetson In Overtime

DELAND, Fl- Savannah State placed four players in double figures in a 58-56 overtime victory over Stetson at the Edmunds Center.

The score was tied at 50 at the end of regulation and the Lady Tigers out-scored Stetson 8-6 in the extra period.

Jumpers by Milan Johnson and Patrice Robinson gave SSU a 54-50 lead in overtime but Stetson rallied to tie the game at 55 with 2:13 left.

The Hatters took a one point lead after a free throw by Ashi Jackson but that would be their last points of the contest as LaShara Smith hit a jumper to give SSU a 57-56 advantage and Courtney Long made a free throw with three seconds left to end the scoring.

Savannah State, who broke a three-game losing streak with the victory, was led by Ivy Smith who had 15 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Robinson added 12 points and 11 rebounds while LaShara Smith and Antoinette Williams pumped in 10 points apiece.

The game had nine lead changes and seven ties.

Both teams shot poorly with SSU shooting 32 percent from the floor and Stetson shooting 29.9 percent.

The Hatters out-rebounded Savannah State 56 to 39.

Stetson held a five point lead in the opening half but the Lady Tigers responded with a 10-1 run to take a 23-19 lead with 5:36 on the clock.

SSU (9-9) led 24-21 at the half.

The Lady Tigers led by five early in the second half but Stetson rallied to take a 27-26 lead with 17:02 remaining.

Savannah State answered to re-take the lead and led 37-30 with 9:40 left.

Free throws by Johnson gave SSU its biggest lead of the game, 43-35, with 5:43 left but Stetson rallied to take a 46-44 lead with 3:15 left.

Stetson led 50-48 but a layup by Williams tied the game for SSU with 1:34 left.

Stetson could have won in regulation but missed three jumpers in the final minute.

The Hatters (2-14) were led by Jackson and Sharnesha Smith who had 12 points each.
