SSU Women Fall In Holiday Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fl- Wofford held Savannah State to one field goal in the final three minutes, forty-two seconds in a 65-55 win over the Lady Tigers in the opening day of the North Florida Osprey Holiday Classic at UNF Arena.
A 3-pointer by Liz Miller gave Wofford a seven-point advantage with just under five minutes remaining but a layup by LaShara Smith followed by a jumper from Antoinette Williams brought SSU back to within 56-53 with 3:42 on the clock.
The rest of the way, Wofford out-scored the Lady Tigers 9-2 as SSU received one free throw each from Ivy Smith and Treasure Monroe.
Savannah State missed their last nine shots from the field to close out the game.
Wofford led by six early in the game but SSU came back to tie it at 20 when Ivy Smith made a field goal with 4:26 left in the half. A layup by LaShara Smith gave SSU a 22-20 lead but the Terriers strung together a 13-2 run to take a nine point lead with 1:44 on the clock.
Wofford led 33-26 at the break.
With a little over 13 minutes left in the game, the Terriers led by 11 but a 12-3 run by Savannah State cut the SSU deficit to 47-45 with eight minutes to go. Wofford scored six of the next eight points and SSU only got as close as three points the rest of the way.
The Terriers shot 41 percent from the floor. Savannah State, which went 9-for-27 in the first half, improved to a respectable 44.8 percent in the second frame. SSU was a cool 10-for-21 from the free throw line.
Miller had a game-high 21 points to lead Wofford.
Ivy Smith had 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals for Savannah State (4-5). LaShara Smith added 13 points. Milan Johnson had nine points and seven rebounds while Patrice Robinson chipped in eight points and six rebounds.
