Lady Tigers Fall To 4-4

EL PASO, Tx- After beginning the season 4-1, the Savannah State women's basketball team lost their third straight game as they fell to Texas at El Paso 75-58 at the Don Haskins Center.

The loss gave SSU a 4-4 mark while the Miners improved to 6-2.

With the score tied at 12, UTEP put together runs of 9-2 and 15-5 as they opened up a 15 point lead with 2:48 left in the first half.

The Miners led 38-25 at intermission.

UTEP shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the first period while Savannah State shot 44.4 percent.

In the second period, a pair of free throws by Ivy Smith got SSU to within 40-27 but the Miners responded with spurts of 8-0 and 9-0 to expand their advantage to 59-35 with 11:28 to play.

Savannah State was able to whittle their deficit to 15 points with under two minutes remaining but could get no closer.

After good shooting in the first half, both teams went cold in the second period. UTEP hit 35.3 percent from the field while Savannah State hit 28.6 percent.

The Miners won the rebounding battle 47 to 34.

Kasia Krezel led UTEP with 15 points.

Ivy Smith led all scorers with 16 points and three steals. Milan Johnson came off the bench to score 13 points and grab five rebounds. Antoinette Williams added 10 points.
