JMU Overpowers Lady Tigers

HARRISONBURG, Va- James Madison placed four players in double figures in a 85-46 victory over Savannah State at the JMU Convocation Center before a crowd of 1980.
The win improved JMU to 6-0 and extended their home winning streak to 30 games.
Savannah State fell to 4-2.
A layup by Ivy Smith followed by a jumper from Patrice Robinson gave SSU an early 4-0 lead. That quickly evaporated as the Dukes scored 16 straight points to open up a 16-4 lead with 13:40 on the clock.
Savannah State put together a mini-run of 5-0 to trim their deficit to seven points but the Dukes came back with a 10-3 spurt to go ahead by 14 with 7:18 left.
Even though SSU held James Madison to one filed goal in the final five minutes of the half, the Lady Tigers trailed 41-21 at the break.
SSU started the second half with a layup from Robinson and two free throws by Courtney Long to pull within 16. The Dukes answered with a 22-8 run that gave them a 30 point cushion with 9:49 left in the game.
A jumper by SSU's Antoinette Williams and a free throw by Robinson stopped the bleeding but James Madison responded with 13 unanswered points.
At the 4:03 mark, James Madison led 76-36.
LaShara Smith scored five points during a 9-4 spurt that pulled Savannah State to within 35 with 1:29 remaining.
Dawn Evans of JMU led all scorers with 20 points.
Long led Savannah State with 10 points. Williams, Ivy Smith and Arabicasia Rollins each scored six points for SSU.
JMU won the battle of the boards, 46-34. The Dukes shot 57.1 percent from beyond the arc and 45.3 percent from the filed.
Savannah State shot 31.9 percent from the field and made 22 turnovers. |
