Burch, Stallworth Win At SSU Eyeopener

SAVANNAH, Ga- Victoria Burch and Marcus Stallworth both came home with first place finishes in the Savannah State Eyeopener Track Meet held at T. A. Wright Stadium.

Both won their 400m hurdle event with Burch winning the women's with a time of 1:04.35 and Stallworth won the men's with a time of 56.25.

A total of 14 school participated in the meet which pleased SSU track & field coach Ted Whitaker. "It was a great turnout of teams. It was the largest invitational meet since I have been here. The competition was very good. Over 425 athletes and 14 universities participated. With support and maybe sponsorship we hope to make next years meet not necessarily bigger, but better. This year's volunteers and officials were great. They made it happen. Great support from the students and track community."

In the women's 100m dash, Katryna Williams was 12th and Kamiyla Collins finished 16th. Williams was 15th in the 200m followed by DaLisha Crowder who was 17th and Collins who was 21st.

CaLisha Crowder was 5th in the 100m hurdles and Burch finished 6th. Mekela Martin placed 2nd in the 400m, Brenay Grimball was 10th. and CaLisha Crowder was 16th.

SSU's relay teams placed second in their events. The 4x100m team was made up of Grimball, Monique Harrison, Martin and Williams while members of the 4x400m team were Burch, Williams, Martin and Harrison. Sharonda Redfield was 7th in the long jump, Amisha Crowder was 9th, DaLisha Crowder was 13th and Netice Grimball finished 19th. DaLisha Crowder was 4th in the triple jump.

Ronald Truell placed 11th in the men's 100m race for Savannah State. Jeremy Boston was 10th in the 200m and Truell was 14th. In the 400m race, O'Bryan Clemons finished 4th, Joseph Ferguson was 6th, and Vernon Williams was 13th. Tyrone McCoy finished second in the 800m race and 7th in the 1500m run.

In the hurdle events, Stallworth was second in the 110m hurdles and Willie Ross and Aaron Whitaker finished 5th and 6th respectively. Ross was 13th in the 400m hurdles.

The 4x100m relay team of Boston, Ferguson, Truell and Rodney McDowell placed 3rd as did the 4x400m relay team that consisted of Boston, McDowell, Truell and Shawn Souvenir.

Souvenir was 5th in the high jump. In the long jump, Charles Huggins placed 2nd followed by Stallworth who was 6th, Souvenir who was 13th and McDowell who finished at 17th. Souvenir was 6th in the triple jump and Craig Eckwood was 13th in the shot put.

"Although we have a lot of work to do an a long way to go I was very pleased with the team performance. It was by far our best team showing of the season," said Whitaker about the performance of the SSU track teams at the event.
