SSU Opens Indoor Track Season

CLEMSON, SC- The Savannah State Indoor Track & Field teams opened their 2006-07 season by participating in the 2006 Clemson Opener on December 1 and 2.

Held at the Clemson indoor Track & Field Facility, Savannah State did not win any events did get three top ten finishes.

A revamped men's 4x400m "A" relay team of three freshmen in Rodney Hamilton, Vernon Williams and Kevin Murray along with junior O' Bryan Clemons placed third in their event with a time of 3:19.66.

Samuel Henry's time of 4:31.98 was good enough for fourth place in the one mile run.

The men's distance melody squad of Henry, Murray, Clemons and freshman Marcus Billups placed seventh with a time of 10:51.48

In other men's events, Dustin Stevens was 15th in the 60m race with a time of 7.07 and 15th in the 200m with a time of 22.64. Rodney McDowell placed 20th in the 200m with a time of 22.79.

Williams (50.54) was 14th in the 400m followed by Murray (50.60) who finished 16th and Hamilton (51.63) who was 35th.

Antoine Sinclair (2:09.80) was 36th in the 800m while Clemons (2:11.64) was 42nd. The "B" 4x400m team of Stevens, Marcus Stallworth, Rashad Freeman and Jeremy Easley placed 16th with a run of 3:30.28

Mekela Martin's time of 59.52 placed the Riverdale, Georgia native 15th in the women's 400m race while sophomore Victoria Burch (1:02.84) was 32nd. Martin finished 37th in the 200m race with a time of 26.27 while Tiffany Andrews (27.28) was 54th and Nakisha Thompson (28.18) was 64th.

In the 800m race, freshman Tamia Thomas (2:28.40) was 14th followed by Jersey City, New Jersey native Tori Smith (2:32.82) who was 20th and Columbia, South Carolina's Jennifer Alvarez (2:35.69) placed 22nd.

The "A" 4x400m relay team made up of Burch, Martin, Thomas and senior Kenyatta White had a time of 4:06.74 which was good enough for 12th place while the "B" squad of Alvarez, Smith, Tyisha Butler and Dalisha Crowder was 25th with their run of 4:27.43.

Two former SSU track athletes ran unattached in the meet.

Eric Keddo won the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 7.81 while Tommy Moore's 7.90 placed him third.
