Newcomers Key Tigers Past High Point

SAVANNAH, Ga- Freshman Curtis Brown scored 12 points off the bench while junior college transfer Joel Davila and freshman Anthony Jones added 11 more to lead Savannah State past high Point 62-57.
The Tigers improved their record to 7-10 despite being held to one filed goal in the final six minutes of the contest.
On Dec. 18, SSU lost to High Point 67-51 on the road.
Davila hit two free throws with nine seconds left to give SSU a six point advantage but High Point's Mike Jefferson drilled a 3-pointer to cut the Tigers' lead to 60-57 with two seconds remaining. Jones iced the game for SSU with a pair of free throws with one second on the clock.
SSU led 27-25 at the half but a basket by Cruz Daniels tied the game to start the second half.
With the contest knotted at 32, SSU scored nine straight points on a 11-3 run to take a 43-35 advantage with 11:25 remaining. It would be the Tigers biggest lead of the evening. High Point would pull within one on three occassions but could not get any closer.
In the first period, SSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led by six with 12:38 on the clock. High Point rallied back to take a 11-10 lead on the strength of timely 3-pointers.
SSU had a 8-2 spurt of their own and led 18-13 with 5:06 remaining.
Trailing by five, Eugene Harris hit a 3-pointer to pull High point to within two with 1:20 left in the half.
Jefferson and Arizona Reid each scored 13 points for High Point (6-5). reid also had 12 reboubds before fouling out.
SSU scored 20 points off 21 High Point turnovers but were out-rebounded 38-23.
High Point was 8-for-13 from the free throw line while the Tigers hit 25-of-36 attempts.
