Reid leads High point in win over SSU

HIGH POINT, NC- Arizona Reid had a game-high 28 points and 14 rebounds to lead High Point to a 67-51 victory over Savannah State at the Millis Athletic Center.

Reid, who also had five assists, contributed 12 points and eight rebounds during the first half.

High Point, which scored 24 points off 19 SSU turnovers, improved to 6-4 while the Tigers fell to 6-9.

Savannah State scored the first basket of the game on a Patrick Hardy lay-up but trailed by as many as six points during the first period until the 2:12 mark when Curtis Brown's 3-pointer put them ahead 21-19.

A jumper by Joel Davilla gave SSU a three point advantage late in the half but Reid's 3-pointer with three seconds left sent the teams into the intermission tied at 26.

High Point used a series of mini-runs to pull away from the Tigers in the second half.

With the scored knotted at 36, High Point went on a 8-0 run. When SSU was down by six with 8:11 left, High Point had six unanswered points to go ahead 50-38 and with just over three minutes remaining, the home team went up by 15 after the Tigers pulled to within 10 after a pair of free throws by Anthony Jones.

Two free throws by Chris Linton got SSU within 13 but a 7-2 spurt by High Point gave them their biggest lead of the evening at 18 with 24 seconds remaining.

Shooting was a tale of two halves for both squads.

SSU shot 41 percent from the floor in the first half but dipped to 7-of-19 shooting after the break. High Point hit 9-of-24 shots in the opening half but improved to 52 percent in the second half.

High Point won the battle of the boards, 35 to 24.

Mike Jefferson and Tim Burns each scored 13 points for High Point.

Linton and Joseph Flegler had 10 points apiece for the Tigers.

High Point was the last stop of a six-game road trip for SSU.
