Gardner-Webb Shuts Out SSU

BOILING SPRINGS, NC- Eight different Gardner-Webb players scored as the Bulldogs rolled up 607 yards of offense in a 66-0 win over Savannah State in Spangler Stadium.
Gardner-Webb, who scored on seven of their first eight possessions, had 29 first downs and averaged 8.0 yards per play while their defense limited the Tigers to just 79 yards of offense.
The Bulldogs missed a 37 yard field goal attempt on their first possession but scored a touchdown on their second possession as David Montgomery scored on a eight yard run with 7:07 left in the first quarter. Taylor Ports added the PAT and GWU led 7-0.
A 27 yard punt return by Dobson Collins gave GWU ( 5-4) the ball at the Savannah State 29 set up a eight yard touchdown pass from Stan Doolittle to Duvaughn Flagler that made the score 14-0 with 4:06 left in the first quarter. Doolittle tossed a three yard scoring pass to Brian Johnston with 30 seconds left in the quarter to cap a nine play, 43 yard drive to extend GWU's lead to 21-0.
Early in the second quarter, Doolittle threw a 46 yard touchdown pass to Flagler to make the score 28-0. Gardner-Webb drove to the SSU 16 on their next possession before stalling. Evan Kay came in a kicked a 30 yard field goal and with 8:50 remaining in the second quarter the Bulldogs led 31-0.
GWU added a pair of scores last in the first half as Patrick Hall scored on a 10 yard run with 3:08 left and Doolittle threw a 13 yard pass to Collins with 25 seconds on the clock.
Gardner-Webb led 45-0 at halftime.
The Bulldogs went ahead 52-0 as they scored on their first play of the second half when Brandon Jackson scored on a 80 yard run.
On their first possession of the fourth quarter, Gardner-Webb went ahead 59-0 as Jackson scored on a 45 yard run with 12:24 left in the game.
SSU took over and had their deepest penetration of the contest. The Tigers drove to the GWU 41 but could not go any further.
The final score of the game came with 4:42 remaining as Jermaine Grandison found the end zone after a 20 yard run to make the score 66-0.
Jackson led GWU with 128 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just four carries. Doolittle passed for 237 yards and four touchdowns while Flagler hauled in four passes for 106 yards and two scores. Marty Patterson and Jeff Williams paced the Bulldogs defense with eight tackles each.
Once again, Savannah State (1-8) could not get its running game on track as they were held to 22 yards on 28 carries. Antwan Edwards had 15 carries for 20 yards for SSU. JaCorey Kilcrease completed 9 of 23 passes for 57 yards and was sacked twice. Deleon Hollinger caught four passes for 21 yards. Javorris Jackson had a game-high 13 tackles.
SSU has a open date on November 10 and will close out the 2007 season on November 17 when they play Mississippi Valley State at T. A. Wright Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. |
