FVSU Downs Savannah State

FORT VALLEY, Ga- Pierre Brown ran for 167 yards and scored two touchdowns as Fort Valley State defeated Savannah State 33-2 at Wildcat Stadium.

The crowd of 6,109 saw the Wildcats improved to 4-2 while Savannah State fell to 1-3.

Savannah State turned the ball over six times with four fumbles and two interceptions. The Tigers also had a field goal attempt blocked and loss the ball on downs twice. FVSU turned those miscues into points.

FVSU scored on four of five red zone chances while Savannah State was 0 for 3.

The contest was filled with penalties. FVSU was penalized 12 times for 150 yards while SSU was penalized 10 times for 100 yards.

Savannah State fumbled the ball on their first possession of the game and FVSU recovered at the Tigers 31. Four plays later, Brown scored on a two yard run with 13:17 on the clock. Jake Grubbs kicked the extra point and the Wildcats led 7-0.

FVSU defensive back Eddie Young picked off two passes from SSU quarterback Greg McCrary. The first happened at the 6:17 mark of the first quarter but FVSU gave the ball right back as Marcus Darrisaw intercepted a pass thrown by Wildcat quarterback Nate Samas on the very next play. Young's second interception came with 48 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Wildcats started the drive at the SSU 42 but could get no further than the Tigers 29. Grubbs came in a booted a 46 yard field goal to extend the FVSU lead to 10-0 with 13:17 left in the first half.

FVSU drove to the Savannah State 15 late in the quarter but SSU's Javorris Jackson picked off a pass in the end zone with 25 seconds remaining.

In the third quarter, SSU got as far as the Wildcats 13 but the drive stalled and a 43 yard field goal attempt by Luis Justiniano was blocked. Courtney Love picked up the loose ball and ran 54 yards to the SSU 13. Three plays later, Garrett Williams scored on a quarterback sneak with 59 seconds left in the third quarter. FVSU attempted to go for two points and SSU's Jackson picked off the pass attempt and rambled 100 yards for the Tigers only points of the game.

The Wildcats scored 17 points in the fourth quarter with a 54 yard run from Brown, a 10 yard run by Brando Anderson and a 39 yard field goal from Grubbs.

During the fourth quarter, SSU drove to the Wildcats 10, 22 and 13 but was unable to score any offensive points.

Antwan Edwards led SSU with 100 yards on the ground. McCrary passed for 74 yards and Deleon Hollinger caught four passes for 60 yards. Antwan Allen, Chris Herans and Calvin Leonard all had nine tackles for the SSU defense.

Samas threw for 77 yards for FVSU and Melvin Atueyi caught two balls for 38 yards. Chris Miller paced the defense with 10 tackles.
