SSU Improves To 10-6

DURHAM, N.C.- Savannah State improves to 10-6 with a double-header sweep over Division I newcomer North Carolina Central at the Durham Bulls Park.

SSU won the opener 9-3 and completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two.

After two scoreless innings, the Tigers got on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Andrew Mendez led off with a single and advanced to second when Matt Nowacki grounded out. Kyle Wilkerson reached on an error which allowed Mendez to go to third. Santos Adames walked which loaded the bases. Brandon Javis struck out but Brett Pointer singled which scored two runners. Adames later stole home to give SSU a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers made two errors in the bottom of the inning which allowed NCCU to score three runs off two hits and tie the game.

SSU would add four more runs in the top of the fourth as Nowacki had a RBI single, Adames walked in a run and Javis drove in two runs with a single.

Wilkerson hit a solo home run in the sixth and David Washington scored a unearned run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Wilkerson scored three times while Javis and Pointer had two RBI each. Micheal Allegretti pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters to get the win on the mound.

In the nightcap, the Tigers scored all their runs in the first inning and pitcher Robert Ramsdale struck out five batters.

Pointer slapped a three-run homer in the inning to drive home Wilkerson, who singled and Javis who walked. Glen Wormley doubled and Mendez followed with a walk. After Wormley stole third, Alfred Arnold doubled to bring home the two runners to give SSU a 5-0 advantage.

The Eagles scored once in the bottom of the first and added two runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth.

Adames had two hits for the Tigers while Pointer had three RBI and Arnold had two.
