SSU Sweeps Pair From Maroon Tigers

ATLANTA, Ga- Savannah State broke a four-game losing streak with a double-header win over Morehouse at Perkerson Park, winning 16-5 and 12-2.

The wins improved SSU to 8-6.

SSU scored two runs in each of the first three innings for a 6-1 lead. The fourth inning saw the Tigers explode for six runs as Brandon Javis, Brett Pointer, David Washington and Andrew Mendez all hit RBI doubles and Glen Wormley smacked a two-run home run to increase their lead to 12-1.

Savannah State scored once in the top of the sixth while Morehouse added two runs. Washington hit a three-run homer for SSU in the top of the seventh. Morehouse countered with a two-run single from Trey Gore in the bottom of the inning.

Washington drove in four runs for SSU while Pointer had three RBI. Alfred Arnold pitched six innings and struck out seven batters to get the win.

Gore had four RBI for the Maroon Tigers while M Brooks took the loss, giving up 13 hits and 12 runs.

In the nightcap, Jarrel Arnold hurled five innings and struck out six batters. Arnold surrendered only one hit.

Kyle Wilkerson hit a two-run homer run in the third while Santos Adames hit a solo home run and Pointer hit a RBI single to give SSU a 4-0 edge.

Morehouse scored twice in the bottom of the third on Joshua Wright's RBI single but SSU added one in the top of the fourth for a 5-2 lead.

The Tigers added two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Wilkerson had three hits and three RBI for SSU while Washington drove in four runs and Matt Oglesby scored three times.

Wright had two RBI for Morehouse. Brian Gray suffered the loss, giving up eight hits and seven runs in four innings. Savannah native James Steadman pitched two innings of relief for Morehouse but was tagged for four runs, four walks and three hits.

Savannah State continues their 14-game road trip by traveling to North Carolina Central on March 15 and 16. The teams are scheduled to play double-headers on both days at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
