Cougars Claw Savannah State

MT. PLEASANT, SC- Four College of Charleston players hit home runs as the Cougars blasted Savannah State 26-8 at Patriots Point Stadium.
The game was delayed almost three hours because of rain.
In the first inning, Kyle Wilkerson walked for the Tigers and then stole second on a passed ball. Wilkerson scored when Alfred Arnold singled to second to give SSU a 1-0 lead. The Cougars scored five runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning to erase the SSU lead.
Wilkerson led off the top of the third with a double for the Tigers. Santos Adames singled which brought home Wilkerson. Brandon Javis smacked a double which allowed Adames to score and pull SSU to within 5-3. Charleston would add five runs in the bottom of the inning to increase their advantage to 10-3.
The Cougars scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings for a 14-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, David Washington hit a RBI double which scored Brett Pointer who led off the inning with a single down the left field line. Charleston scored five times in the bottom of the sixth and added five more in the bottom of the seventh to give the Cougars a 24-4 cushion.
The Tigers (6-3) were able to plate three runs in the top of the eighth. Pointer led off with a solo shot over the left field wall. Brian Johnson singled and Washington doubled to left center which put runners on second and third with no outs. Matt Oglesby grounded out which allowed Johnson to score. David Rowland grounded out which allowed Washington to cross home plate and make the score 24-7.
The Cougars, who pounded five SSU pitchers for 25 hits, scored twice in the bottom of the inning to expand their lead to 26-7.
Javis hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth for the final runs of the contest.
SSU, who made five errors, collected 13 hits and were led by Javis who had three doubles and a home run. Pointer and Washington had two hits apiece. Robert Jones took the loss. Jones pitched two innings and gave up four hits, eight runs and six walks.
Michael Kohn had three hits and five RBI for the Cougars (7-2). Casey Lucchese struck out 13 batters and got the win for the College of Charleston.
