Mercer Tops SSU

SAVANNAH, Ga- Mercer scored 11 runs in the first inning and ran away with a 16-1 win over Savannah State at Claude Smith Field.
Alfred Arnold took the loss for SSU, who dropped their second straight and fell to 3-2, as he was touched for 11 runs and seven hits in one-third of a inning.
David Harden got the win for Mercer. Harden pitched four innings and gave up six hits and no runs.
The Bears added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to increase their lead to 14-0.
SSU scored their lone run in the top of the sixth. Andrew Mendez led off with a walk and Brett Pointer and Santos Adames hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Dexter Kelley reached on a fielder's choice which scored Mendez.
Mercer (1-3) scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings.
Savannah State left nine runners on base while Mercer stranded 12.
Adames and Kelley combined to collect five of the nine SSU hits. Adames went 3-for-4 while Kelly was 2-for-4.
Mike Armstrong had three hits for the Bears while John Dortch scored three times.
