Tigers Open Season With Win

SAVANNAH, Ga- After getting rained out on day one of the HBCU Classic, Savannah State opened their 2008 baseball season a day later with a 13-5 victory over Chicago State.

Leading 5-4 after six and a half innings, SSU exploded for eight runs in the seventh to take a 13-4 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Wilkerson and Glen Wormley led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Brandon Javis doubled home Wilkerson. Alfred Arnold walked to load the bases and Andrew Mendez hit a grand slam to clear the bases. Brett Pointer and Dexter Kelley were both hit by pitches and Wilkerson came back to the plate and smashed a three run shot over the left field fence.

Kyle Wilkerson and Brandon Javis had two hits each for SSU. Wilkerson drove in five runs and scored twice while Javis scored twice and had drove in one run. Mendez had five RBI and pointer scored three times. pointer hit a solor home run in the sixth.

Freshman Michael Allegretti (1-0) pitched six innings, scattering five hits and only one earned run. He struck out five batters. Matt Oglesby got the save, pitching 2 1/3 innings and striking out two batters.

Josh Applebaum and Lucas Grow had three hits each for CSU. Applebaum hit a three run home run in the seventh. Chris Freshour (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars.
