Tigers Edge Norfolk State To End Season

NORFOLK, Va- Back-to-back RBI triples by Jonathan Ross and Brandon
Javis led Savannah State to a 4-3 season ending win over Norfolk
State at Marty L. Miller Field.
With the score tied at two, pitcher Marcus Cortes led off the ninth
with a double to right center. Kyle Wilkerson walked and after John
Keene hit into a double play, Ross smacked a triple to center field
that brought home Wilkerson and Javis hit a triple to right field
that scored Ross. Chris Phethean flied out to right field to end the
inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, James Mock relieved Cortes who had
pitched eight innings, giving up five hits, two runs and five walks. Cortes also had five strikeouts.
Mock struck out the first batter he faced before giving up a solo
home run to John Boyd. The next batter fouled out to first base
and Mock walked the next batter. Moriba George reached on a
fielder's choice butCharles Lalane, who walked, was out at second to
end the game.
The Tigers led 1-0 in the second as Phethean scored on a fielder's
choice but Norfolk State (23-23) tied the game in the bottom of the third.
Keene and Ross had back-to-back singles in the fifth and Keene scored
on a wild pitch to put the Tigers ahead 2-1.
NSU tied the game at two in the bottom of the seventh on Lalane's RBI
single that scored Jerrod Farley, who led off the inning with a walk.
Keene, Ross and Phethean each had two hits for SSU (31-23). Cortes
picked up the win to even his record at 7-7 while Mockearned his
second save of the season.
For Norfolk State, De'Mece Williams took the loss on the mound. At
the plate, Lalane had two hits and two RBI while Boyd and Ernie Banks
had two hits each. Farley scored twice for the Spartans.
