Savannah State Drops Twin-bill To Spartans

NORFOLK, Va- Leon Schabacker struck out six batters in game one and Luke Foss struck out eight batters in game two as Norfolk State swept a double-header from Savannah State 3-2 and 6-1 at Marty L. Miller Field.

NSU scored in the first inning when Juan Serrano hit a RBI double for a 1-0 lead. In the third, Serrano singled to lead off the Spartans half of the inning and came home when Lyall Foran hit a two-run home run over the left field fence.

In the top of the seventh, Chris Phethean singled to start the inning and was followed by Alfred Arnold's two run blast over the left field fence to cut the Spartans lead to 3-2.  The next two batter struck out looking and Tim Waine ended the contest by grounding out to second.

Charles Lalane and Serrano had two hits each for NSU. Schabacker pitched six innings and gave up two hits to get the win.

Phethean had two hits for the Tigers. Mark Sherrod took the loss, going six innings. Sherrod gave up six hits and five walks while striking out five.

In game two, Foran hit a two-run double in the first inning to help the Spartans to a 3-0 lead.

NSU added a run in the third and scored twice in the sixth to go ahead 6-0.

The Tigers lone run came in the top of the seventh.

Jonathan Ross led off with a single, advanced to second of a fielding error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Javis' ground-out to second allowed Ross to score.  Glen Wormley singled through the right side of the infield and Errol Jones was sent in as his pinch runner. Waine doubled to left center which allowed Jones to go to third. Brian Johnson was sent in to hit for Bryon Weston but struck out swinging to end the game.

Lalane went 3-for-4 for NSU while Foran drove in three runs. Foss allowed five hits over seven innings to earn the win.

For Savannah State, Ross had two hits. Patrick Bellow pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 13 hits and six runs. He struck out five but issued four walks. James Mock pitched two thirds of a inning and struck out both batters he faced.
