Phethean Powers SSU Past Mercer

MACON, Ga- Chris Phethean went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored three times to lead Savannah State in a 8-3 victory over Mercer at Claude Smith Field.
The win broke a three-game losing streak for the Tigers and lifted their record to 27-20.
Tim Waine went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs while Kyle Wilkerson hit a home run and a double and ended the day with four RBI.
The Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Mercer scored their first run in the bottom of the eighth.
Waine hit a two-run double in the first and Wilkerson belted a solo homer in the fifth for a 3-0 advantage.
Savannah State scored once in the sixth and three times in the top of the eighth for their biggest lead of the contest.
In the ninth, SSU scored once while the Bears had two runners to cross home plate.
Matt Crawford had three of Mercer's nine hits.
Marcus Cortes pitched 8.2 innings for SSU. The senior gave up eight hits and three runs. He walsked five batters and had four strikeouts.
Blake Quarles took the loss for Mercer (25-20), going 4.2 innings. Quarles gave up three hits, three runs and three walks. He also struck out three batters.
