SSU baseball wins season opener

JACKSONVILLE, Fla- The Carlton Hardy era in Savannah State baseball got off to a good start as the Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Albany State in the HBCU Baseball Classic at Paxon Field.

The Tigers led 3-0 after four inning but ASU scored twice in the fifth to make the score 3-2.

SSU ran its lead to 9-2 after eight innings of play but the Rams scored three in the top of the ninth.

Both teams had 11 hits.

John Keene went 4-for-4 for the Tigers (1-0) and had two runs batted in. Chad Sumpter added a pair of singles while Santos Adams and Brandon Javis each hit solo homeruns. Javiar Fiallo pitched 8.1 innings for SSU, getting four strikeouts.

Albany State (0-1), who stranded nine base runners, had four different players to get two hits.
