Test Center Rules

The Regents' Test, normally taken during the semester after a student has completed 30 hours of semester credit, is designed to certify the reading and writing competency of all students in the University System of Georgia.  Students who do not take and successfully pass both parts of the Regents’ Test by the time they reach 45 semester credit hours must take remediation courses in the area(s) not passed.

The exam has two sections: Essay and Reading.  Students are given 60 minutes to complete each section and are required to take both sections at one sitting.  The Essay test requires the student to write a clear, organized essay on one of four topics; the Reading test requires the student to demonstrate reading comprehension skills.

Students transferring from one school to another within the University System of Georgia must comply with the 30-semester hour rule.  Transfer students with 30 or more semester hours from an institution or program that does not require the Regents' Test must take the test no later than the second semester of enrollment at SSU.

A student may choose to take the test before 30 semester hours are completed. Remediation courses are not required for students who have fewer than 30 hours.

Visit the Regents' Testing Program web site at www.gsu.edu/rtp for a complete overview of the Regents’ exam, policies and procedures, sample and practice test, the complete listing of approved essay.

Signing Up for the Regents' Test:

·        Students should register to take the Regents' Test during regular student registration periods as they do for a course; the Regents' Test schedule is listed in each semester's printed schedule of classes.

·        Students who do not register for the Regents’ Test during the regular registration periods should report to the Registrar’s Office for registration no later than two (2) weeks prior to the Regents’ Testing period.

  • Students should refer to the Course Reference Number (CRN) on their Registration Printout in order to determine their testing session date and time.

  • The Office of Retention and Student Success will post the Regents’ Testing Schedule in all buildings accessible to students at least three weeks before Regents’ testing period begins. Students must double-check their scheduled printouts against this posted schedule for any changes in room assignments.

PLEASE NOTE:

Extended Time (double the standard time = 2 hours) is only granted to students who meet the eligibility requirements for remediation, or to those students who have documented special needs.

Students with documented disabilities or special needs should contact the Center for Student Development in the King-Frazier Student Complex Building Room 233 or call (912) 356-2202 for more information regarding Special Accommodation testing and necessary documentation.  Students must request special accommodations at least 20 days prior to the test date.

INTERNATIONAL students must take and pass the English Proficiency Exam.  International students must register at least two (2) weeks prior to each testing period with Mrs. Yvonne Warren in the Whiting Hall, room 261, or at (912) 353-3107.

What To Bring For The Test:

  1.  A validated government issued photo I.D. card. (The photo must be clear and easily identifiable, or you will be denied admission to the test.)

  2. Two (2) # 2 pencils and two (2) ballpoint pens (blue or black ink) for the essay.

  3.  A dictionary (a thesaurus is prohibited) which may be used during the last 15 minutes of the essay test.

  4. The copy of the Regents' test registration printout issued by the Registrar's office, or the slip issued by the Office of Retention and Student Success.

Regents' Test Policy for Transfer Students:

Students with 30 or more semester credit hours transferring from outside of the System or from a System program that does not require the Regents' Test should take the test during their first semester of enrollment in a program leading to the baccalaureate degree. Those who have not passed before their third semester of enrollment are subject to the remediation requirement.

The Office of Retention and Student Success offers an optional diagnostic test to transfer students who wish to prepare for the actual test.  This optional test will consist of a writing assessment and reading test to assess the level of readiness for the Regents' Test.  If you opt to take this readiness test and find that you need additional preparation for the Regents' Test, you may enroll in a three-hour non-credit course(s) also known as the Regents' Success Seminar course.  This course, which is offered each semester, gives individualized instruction and a series of test simulations in reading and writing.

If you choose not to enroll in this course, you can still get some preparatory assistance in the ReWrite Connection, the University's reading and writing lab.  Regardless of the path you choose to prepare for this mandated test, remember, we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

For more information or to schedule a test contact the Office of Retention and Student Success at (912) 353-3112 or email us at testing@savstate.edu. You may also visit the Regents'Testing Program website for more information about the test and to view sample practice tests at www.gsu.edu/rtp.

Consequences of Failure to Pass the Regents' Test:

·         Students who have earned 30 hours or more and who fail one or both portions by making below the minimum required score must retake at least one part of the Regents' during each subsequent semester of enrollment until the test is passed.

·         Students who have earned 45 or more hours and have not yet taken the Regents' Exam must enroll in the appropriate Regents' Remediation course(s) coordinated by the Center for Teaching Learning and Academic Support.  Failure to enroll in these courses will result in cancellation of registration and/or suspension of all credit courses.
