 Re-Testing Policies:

The COMPASS Exit Exams can be taken once each semester.  Students are allowed one (1) re-test for a fee of $25 per exam if the initial test scores fall within five (5) points of the recommended score.  Students who have exhausted three (3) attempts to exit Learning/Academic Support may be eligible to make an appeal to earn 1-2 additional attempts in the  course.  This appeal must go through the Director of the Center for Teaching and Academic Support (Dr. Joan Maynor, Whiting Hall, room 253).  See Appeals Process and Policy for more information on the appeals process.

Appeals Process and Policy:

The Appeals Committee shall consist of the Program Director who will chair the Committee; the three area lead program instructors; and one other faculty, preferably from one of the two areas other than the area that offers the course that the appellant failed to exit within three semesters. In case one of the lead program instructors is the appellant’s instructor, another faculty from one of the two other areas will serve on the Appeals Committee.

Procedures:

A student desiring to appeal a suspension must be in an exit level course (099), must have only one Academic Assistance (Learning Support) course to exit, and at least an 80 class average in his/her Academic Assistance class. The student must address a letter of appeal to the Director of Learning Support (CTLAS) within seven calendar days* after the final test results have been returned to the instructors for distribution to the students. The letter must be accompanied by a letter of support from the most recent instructor of the course the student failed to exit in order to participate in the appeal process.

The Committee shall review (1) the student’s letter of support from his/her most recent instructor of the course he/she failed to exit, (2) evidence of student’s academic performance (overall class average of 80 or above), and (3) student’s Academic Assistance status (semester count and number of remaining remedial courses to complete). Granting an appeal shall require the approval of at least three of the five committee members.

The Director of Learning Support shall inform the appellant of the Committee’s decision in writing within four calendar days of the receipt date of the letter of appeal. If the student is dissatisfied with the decision, he/she can appeal to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

If an appeal is granted, the student shall have one additional semester to remediate, and the student must enroll only in his/her remedial class.

*Exceptions are summer semester due to the brevity between summer and fall semesters. During the summer, students must appeal within three days after the final results have been returned for distribution.
