NCAA Athletic Certification Self-Study

Members of the Savannah State University NCAA Self-Study Steering Committee completed and submitted to the NCAA its self-study report of the SSU Athletic Program as a part of the NCAA Division I athletics certification requirement on 19 July 2004.  Savannah State University received its original certification notice last fall after which President Carlton E. Brown appointed the steering committee and the year-long study began in the areas of Academic Integrity, Governance & Commitment to Rules Compliance and Equity, Welfare & Sportsmanship. Now that the University has completed it self-study report, an external team of reviewers (NCAA Peer Review Team, consisting of five athletic administrators and/or faculty from other NCAA Division I programs) will conduct a four-day evaluation of the athletic program during their campus visit beginning November 14, 2002. The visiting committee will report to the NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification, another independent group, which will determine the institution’s certification status and announce the decision publicly.  The NCAA has three options on an institution’s certification: certified, certified with conditions and not certified.  For institutions that fail to conduct a rigorous self-study and correct problems identified, tough sanctions can be imposed and teams may be ruled ineligible for NCAA championships.

The purpose of the NCAA certification process is to ensure integrity in intercollegiate athletics by opening the affairs of athletics to the university community and the public, setting standards or operating principles for athletics and imposing sanctions for institutions that fail to conduct a comprehensive study or correct problems. The NCAA may choose to certify an institution, certify with conditions, or not certify -- which may make an institution ineligible for NCAA championships. The NCAA believes that the self-study requirement promotes an institution's self-awareness of the role of athletics, affirms worthwhile aspects of an athletics programs and identifies opportunities to improve athletics.
