Savannah State Finishes Fourth At PGA National Minority Golf Championships

PORT St. LUCIE, Fl- The Savannah State men's golf team finished in fourth place at the 22nd Annual PGA National Minority Golf Championships held May 9-11 at the PGA Golf Club.

As a team, the Tigers finished with a three-round score of 899 (293-301-305).

Bethune-Cookman University captured the tournament title with a three-round tally of 918 (309-307-302).

Finishing in eighth place was SSU freshman Spencer Slade who recorded a 54-hole score of 220 (74-73-73) while senior Zach Gelow finished tied for 12th place with a three-round score of 224 (75-75-74). Jamie Montgomery was tied for 19th with a three-round tally of 227 (73-78-76) and Riley Baxter finished tied for 25 with a 230 (73-75-82).

SSU and Florida A&M shared the overall lead in the Division I men's team standing with a 5-over-par after the first day of competition. The Tigers slipped to third after day two as Bethune-Cookman took the lead. Bethune's Carl Corbin was overall low medalist with a three-day score of 209.

Nearly 200 contestants from 47 colleges and universities, representing 14 countries comprised the field for the 2008 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.
