SSU Improves Home Record To 5-1

SAVANNAH, Ga- David Washington scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Savannah State a 3-2 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-18) in the second game of a double-header. The Tigers won the opener 4-1.

SSU led 2-1 entering the top of the seventh. The Hawks loaded the bases but were only able to score one run to tie the game.

Washington led off the seventh with a walk and advanced to second on a balk by UMES pitcher Carl Huber. Matt Nowacki drew a walk and Tristan Smith laid down a bunt that resulted in a fielders choice that advanced the runners. A error by the Hawks catcher allowed Washington to score the game winning run.

Brandon Javis hit a RBI single in the first for SSU and Washington blasted a home run in the second to put the Tigers ahead 2-0.

UMES had their chances to win but left 10 runners on base.

Alfred Arnold pitched five innings for SSU and struck out four batters and tossed a two hitter. Chris Chupp and Matt Oglesby threw one inning each with Oglesby collecting the win for the Tigers.

In game one, Michael O'Neil hurled a complete game four hitter as he fanned five batters for the Tigers.

The Hawks Dan Sterling pitched six innings and struck out 10 batters in a losing effort.

SSU stranded 13 base-runners and committed two errors. The Tigers left the bases loaded in the first and second innings.

Alfred Arnold had a RBI single in the first and Andrew Mendez had a RBI single in the third for an early 2-0 advantage for Savannah State.

Eastern Shore cut SSU's deficit in half in the top of the fourth but SSU's Mendez hit a solo home run in the fifth and Glen Wormley hit a RBI triple in the seventh to round out the scoring in the game.

Kyle Wilkerson had three hits for SSU (11-6).
